FORCES FOR CHANGE: BRITISH VOGUE SEPTEMBER ISSUE 2019

Sunday 4 August 2019

The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, has guest-edited British Vogue's September issue for 2019. Having worked on the issue for around seven months, the Duchess has been working on this incredible project throughout her pregnancy and throughout the birth of her son Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.

On the morning of Thursday 1st of August my British Vogue subscription landed through my letterbox, one day prior to the September issue being available on newsstands. I grabbed it, made a cup of tea and headed to my bureau to sit and flick through this extra special edition of British Vogue, an edition unlike any other issue – THE issue – the one that was co-edited by HRH Meghan Markle the Duchess of Sussex.

Forces for change – a September issue like no other – is an ode to diversity, inclusivity and women who are, well, a force for change. Featuring 15 inspiring women from all different backgrounds, who are all on completely different journeys, this issue breaks boundaries and raises the bar for inclusivity within the realm of fashion, beauty and media, as well as society too.

Actress Jane Fonda, Climate activist Greta Thunberg, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden and model Adwoa Abdoah are just four of the 15 inspiring women who grace the front of the fashion bible's biggest, most important issue of the year. Joining the above inspiring women are Jameela Jamil, Ramla Ali, Sinead Burke, Adut Akech, Christy Turlington Burns, Salma Hayek, Laverne Cox, Yarda Shahidi, Gemma Chan, Francesca Hayward, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

A striking cover that inspires you to be a force for change – 16 rectangles, 15 for the inspiring women featured within and and one for you.. the reader.

The entire issue is masterful. That's the first word that popped into my head as soon as I started reading. Breaking down walls, stigmas and changing the world in the process – the women featured on the pages of British Vogue's most significant September issue ever really are changing the world for the better.

Instead of just Edward Enninful's editor's letter this month, there's an additional letter – one from Her Royal Highness herself, Meghan Markle. Both reflect on their initial encounters, meetings and ideas – candid and open these letters give us a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes process of this extra special edition of Vogue.

A masterful collaboration – Enninful and Markle are changing the industry, transforming society and highlighting those who are changing the world for the better – and this includes themselves

Alongside the traditional Vogue fashion features, this issue contains an about body positivity by Jameela Jamil; an inspiring article about an all-female bakery that empowers disadvantaged women; a piece about SmartWorks a charity that HRH Meghan Markle is a patron of, about helping women back into work; and an inspiring interview with ethologist Dr Jane Goodall conducted by HRH Prince Harry the Duke of Sussex.

This issue looks at disability, race, body shape, climate change, age and social stance in a totally different way. As somebody who is passionate about inclusivity and diversity, this issue is a breath of fresh air. Inspiring us all to be a force for change, the British Vogue September Issue 2019 makes a difference and will go down in history.

I highly recommend grabbing a copy of this magazine if you can. It's groundbreaking and game-changing and utterly inspiring.

I cannot wait until I'm working for this publication – it's changing the fashion industry, society and the world all for the better and I can't wait until I'm part of the Vogue family one day... hopefully.
